Why Own A Restaurant?


There are many valid responses when answering the question, why own a restaurant? It may not be the easiest business market to break into but it can be very rewarding. Many people work in the food service industry when they are young and just starting out in employment. This is a great way to gain experience and learn more about running a restaurant. After spending many years in the restaurant industry some people may decide they want to further their career by owning and operating their own establishment.

A definite plus that helps many to choose why to own a restaurant is the fact that they are their own boss. Some people are natural leaders and don’t do well working as a subordinate. This is one reason why people choose to own a restaurant. Being in charge and constantly busy is something that some people thrive on. A restaurant would be a great business venture for the risk takers and determined entrepreneurs.

Cooking and culinary arts is a highly credible skill. College and university education is available to further this area of expertise. Having vast knowledge of different culture and food types is beneficial to any restaurant. The simple love of cooking may be reason enough for some people to pursue owning their own restaurant. Specialty restaurants for specified cuisine types are very popular and a great reason to own a restaurant. When you truly love what you are doing it makes all the difference in the world.

Franchise opportunities may be your reason as to why own a restaurant. There is a higher level of security buying into a well known franchise. Franchise fees and other costs will apply but often easily pay for themselves over time. Joining a leading franchise chain can greatly increase your personal take home profit over the years. There are several reasons why one may own a restaurant. As long as your choice is reasonable and well thought out, the rest is business.


It is sad that many rookie restaurant operators don't know just a few little things that could mean the difference between profits, and a "For Lease" sign in the window!

Make a point of scheduling a check of all lighting, (IN and OUT)!

Some owner operators get so tied up inside their restaurant that they never take a stroll outside the building. I recall one marginally successful restaurant that had many lights out on their front sign for years. The owner always drove in the back alley and never walked outside at night time.

You must try to keep a "critical" eye and see your restaurant as your customer does! (They aren't in the kitchen the entire time ;-))
